"With You I'm Built-in Once again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 movie Fast Pause. Information technology was performed by Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited every bit Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number iv on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number two on the UK singles chart.[3]
History [edit]
The music from Fast Intermission was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Ballad Connors put words to four of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written well-nigh of the lyrics to 'With You I'm Born Again' in 22 minutes, but I couldn't discover two words and it was driving me crazy."[iv] The right words came to her on her way to an ice foam parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper along with her guild. "I had finally establish it—the line I was seeking--'Come show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll discover this'—and I wanted to get it downwardly on paper."[4]
Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright equally Preston's partner for the two duets that had been written for the film,[5] and each singer also had a solo number to cut for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally non very addicted of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to practice their own thing, only this worked out extremely well for both of them."[4] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'thou Born Again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it being a striking unmarried."[6]
Connors noted the impression some were left with past the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the vocal on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he'due south a star.'" Connors besides shared, "The late corking Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the hairdresser chair when he first heard the vocal on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cut past the scissors. Truthful story."[4]
Merely radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Pause soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco withal permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the dance tune "Become for It", was chosen as the single that would exist issued to promote the anthology. That selection barely made a paring in the charts, spending one week on the Disco singles chart at number lxxx in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at number 108.[2]
The picture show did not become much attending, either, and Preston described their adjacent attempt to requite "With You I'm Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "after the movie didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled information technology off that album and put information technology on mine."[vi] Preston's album, Tardily at Dark, came out later in 1979, simply even with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "we still didn't think of it every bit a single."[six] It did, however, begin to get airplay in the European market[six] and was finally released equally a unmarried at the end of the yr.
Some other hurdle the vocal had to overcome was the fact that its title did not click with some record buyers. "Connors says her only regret nigh 'With You I'thou Born Over again' is that she didn't title it 'Come up Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to let me know we had a monster hit on our easily but that early on many people were going into record stores asking for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost as a issue.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may have also been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, merely Robert Culp and I were lovers at the fourth dimension, and that's the way we felt about 1 another. Culp was the inspiration."[4] The singers also felt the song could be interpreted in a religious context likewise as existence a romantic honey song. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Pause, we understood it was a romantic vocal. But I think of it as religious because God is beloved, so information technology all inter-relates."[6] This religious aspect would later be played upwards by the prove Glee in the season two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played past Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed equally a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.
Nautical chart success [edit]
"With Y'all I'k Built-in Once again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the mag dated December eight, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[two] The post-obit week marked its first appearance on the UK singles nautical chart[8] and on Billboard's listing of the 50 well-nigh popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number ii showing.[ix] [3] It also started three weeks on the magazine'southward Hot Soul Singles chart in the January xix, 1980, outcome and got as loftier as number 86.[x] It was Preston's biggest hit in five years and the biggest pop hit of Wright'south career.
